look at how george w. bush became president. it was the overpowering incentive in the republican party was in win. in the 1990s they lost. the government shutdown in 1995. they lost when clinton won again. they lost on impeachment. they say, we have to find a way to win an election. you have george w. bush and compassionate conservatism. it's a totally different game. they said compassionate conservative was big government conservatism and spoiled the good name of conservatism and gave us barack obama. you have two sort of competing things, two sort of complementary things going on in the conservative movement. one is standard. beat the other party's guy. beat barack obama. the other one is there's no such thing in a post-bush world of being too pure in the republican party. what that exactly means from a policy and agenda standpoint, i don't know, nobody's articulated yet. there's this constant battle now, constant reinforcement for people who seek out the most pure position, most pure label and you can gain stature, prominence

president george w. bush was the very first president to declassify a presidential daily briefing. he declassified it and released it in the spring of 2004 to the commission that was investigating the 9/11 attacks. the briefing that was declassified was the one delivered to president bush while he was on vacation at his ranch in texas five weeks before 9/11 happened. the title of that specific presidential briefing, why it is so famous, why it made headlines not just then but for years, was -- actually i'll just let condoleezza rice explain it. here she is testifying as national security adviser in watch. >> i want to ask you some questions about the august 6, 2001 pdb. you acknowledged that richard clarke told you that al qaeda cells were in the united states. did you tell the president at any time prior to august 6 of the existence of al qaeda cells in the united states? >> first, let me just make certain -- >> if you could just answer that question because i only have a very limited time. >> i understand, commissioner, but it's important that i also address -- [ applause ] it's

we made george bush come back to the congress and get a vote before we went into iraq. the congress, i think, made a mistake in doing it, but at least we all took responsibility for what happened. in this one, the president is taking it all on himself. what's the hurry and what is the goal? what are you expecting to be the goal that we accomplish day two after we've shot in 50 tomahawk missiles? when we have taken out assad? is that the goal? or is it take out the syrian army? or is it to lay the country waste to make rubble? what is it we are intending to get out of this? >> you clearly want a vote on this, and some of our viewers have been tweeting about this and there's a lot of consternation, obviously, as we stand now in the precipice of what looks like another war in the middle eve. one viewer writing into me, the president needs a vote here if for no other reason to have cover for what happens afterwards. do you think there will be political recriminations after the fact if the president doesn't go to congress? >> well, you know, we've seen how well the drones ha

george w. bush encapsulated this perfectly when the first wiretapping was reported in 2005 when he basically said, you know what, if you're not al qaeda, you've got nothing to worry about. this sort of thing cuts the other direction too, though. what if the american people haven't much cared about or maybe have even approved of something the government was doing because we thought it was for fighting terrorism but instead it's not. something that everybody -- maybe a little squeamish about but basically okay with because it's supposedly only for use against bad guys in foreign countries. guys like this, right? turns out instead it's being used by local american cops for regular old crime for stuff done by americans that has nothing to do with wacky religious ideology. what if powers of the u.s. government that had some agent somewhere listening into this conversation with the threats to the u.s. embassies. what if that same power has the same agents also listening in on your phone calls. findin
